What to Expect
Laying the foundation
Chiropractic care is like building a house – certain things have to happen in a particular order in order for everything to stand strong and work correctly. When building a house, if you tried to put up your walls before you had a solid foundation, your walls would be weak and eventually collapse. If you tried to put on your roof before the walls were ready, you would run into the same problem. The same is true for your body. Your body has to go through a particular plan of care in order to repair itself correctly and fully. There are three general phases of chiropractic care . . .
During your first visit you will be asked to complete a Case History that will focus on a life history of previous spinal injuries that had the potential to heal incorrectly, weakening your spine, interfering with your nervous system and causing your body to become weaker and less able to adapt than normal. Dr. Connell will review your case history with you and then perform a chiropractic examination and in most cases take the necessary x-rays. Patients in pain will be offered a conservative treatment before leaving. On the second visit Dr. Connell will review the examination and x-rays with the patient and then layout recommendations to get the best results possible.
What qualifies as a previous spinal injury?
Any time the body hits the ground or is struck in a jolting manner, some of the small spinal joints sprain. If those injuries heal incorrectly then inflammation and scar tissue will continously weaken the area even more. With every spinal injury more and more interference is done to nervous system and the person becomes less and less adaptable to their environment.
Phase 1: Relief Care also known Initial Intensive Care
If you are in pain when you come into our office, the first objective is to help you feel better. Depending on the severity of your problem, it is typical to need care 2-3 times per week for 4-12 weeks. This care is designed to not only help eliminate the symptoms but also to allow a maximum healing of the most current damage or injury to the spine and nervous system.
Phase 2: Reconstructive Care
Reconstructive care is designed to get to the older or "deeper layers" of spinal injuries that have occurred over the years. The falls off a bike, sports injuries auto accidents are just a few examples.
Phase 3: Wellness Care
Once your body has fully healed, it is important to come in for periodic adjustments to avoid problems in the future. Usually, this only requires a quick visit to the chiropractor once a week. Wellness care accomplishes two things; first, it maximizes what function and health potential that your body has. Second, wellness care prevents or greatly slows down further decay of the spine.
